Cuisines: Malaysian

Chef Sharizan Mohd Rafi Kanan, known to regulars simply as Chef Shah, moved his Malaysian restaurant Secret Flavor from Xuhui to Qiantan in July 2025, relocating into a newer, still-developing pocket of Pudong that sits apart from the district's older, more established dining clusters around Lujiazui and Zhangjiang. The restaurant fills a gap in Shanghai's halal scene, where Malaysian cooking remains far less common than Chinese Muslim, Indian, or Middle Eastern options.

Nasi lemak forms the centrepiece of the menu, sold in versions ranging from a plain coconut rice plate to one topped with fried chicken, and the dish has become popular enough that Chef Shah runs a separate nasi lemak counter reported to sell around four hundred packs on a typical day. Laksa and a beef rendang built on slow-cooked spice paste round out the more substantial dishes, while a satay platter and bubur cha cha, a Malaysian dessert built on coconut milk and sweet potato, give the menu range beyond its rice specialties.

In a Malaysian media profile, Chef Shah described sourcing only halal-certified ingredients from a network spanning China, Malaysia, Indonesia, and Singapore, a level of specificity about sourcing rather than a blanket assurance. No single named certifying body applies to the restaurant itself, consistent with how most of Shanghai's halal-friendly restaurants operate absent a unified national certification system, but the sourcing detail sets Secret Flavor apart from restaurants offering only a general assurance.

Qiantan's newer development, still filling in around Haiyang West Road, gives Secret Flavor a different kind of neighbourhood than Shanghai's older halal restaurant clusters, one built around recently constructed retail space rather than a historic Muslim quarter. Chef Shah also runs a second, fuller-menu location under the same name, a detail worth confirming directly before a visit given how the storefronts and addresses have shifted since the move.
