Hongchangxing
Halal certified · Shanghai, China
One of Shanghai's most storied dining institutions, Hongchangxing (洪长兴) at 1 Yunnan South Road has been serving halal cuisine since 1891, making it one of the oldest restaurants of its kind in the city. Tucked in the Huangpu district just steps from Nanjing Road and People's Square, it has been a beloved landmark for generations of Shanghainese and visitors alike.
The restaurant is best known for its signature copper pot mutton hotpot — a traditional style where plain broth is brought to a boil in a charcoal-fired copper vessel, and thinly sliced, carefully selected Hu sheep mutton is swirled through the clear soup and dipped into a rich, homemade peanut sauce. The meat arrives fresh and unmarinated, letting its natural quality shine. Popular cuts include hot fatty lamb and upper brain mutton, alongside fresh-cut mutton liver and lamb specialties. Beyond the hotpot, the menu spans halal a la carte dishes, spicy mutton noodles, beef spring rolls, and beef pot stickers.
One thing never to miss is the queue outside the beef fried bun (牛肉煎包) window — golden, crispy-bottomed pan-fried buns with generous fillings that have been drawing loyal crowds for decades. Upstairs, private rooms are available for family gatherings and celebrations, with a minimum spend around 1,000 RMB.
A true old-brand (老字号) institution that has outlasted empires and pandemics alike, Hongchangxing remains a must-visit for anyone seeking authentic halal Shanghai food with deep historical roots.
