Tempura Asakusa SAKURA
Casual Dining · Tokyo, Japan
Cuisines: Japanese
Directly opposite Asakusa Station on the seventh floor of THE CITY ASAKUSA KAMINARIMON building, Tempura Asakusa SAKURA occupies a singular position among Tokyo's halal-certified restaurants — a meticulously conceived tempura restaurant that has achieved the rare distinction of being simultaneously halal-certified, entirely gluten-free, and rated the best tempura restaurant in Tokyo on Google Maps. Founded and run by owner Takehiro Iida, with Indonesian Muslim staff member Tina at the heart of its daily halal compliance, the restaurant was built from the outset on a determination to make genuine, premium Japanese tempura accessible to Muslim visitors and those with dietary restrictions, without making any compromise on flavour or technique.
The interior is an immediately memorable space. Cherry blossoms bloom across the entire ceiling year-round — an homage to the restaurant's name and an evocation of Japan's most beloved seasonal moment, hanami, brought permanently indoors. All seating is counter-style, arranged facing the open kitchen where chefs fry each piece of tempura individually before the diner's eyes — a format that transforms the meal into a quiet, attentive, and deeply immersive form of Japanese dining theatre. The atmosphere is calm, traditional, and beautiful, and despite being located in one of Tokyo's most tourist-heavy neighbourhoods, feels considered and unhurried.
The kitchen's technical commitment to quality is evident in every aspect of production. The tempura batter is made entirely from rice flour rather than wheat flour — achieving both gluten-free compliance and a notably lighter, crisper result. The frying oil is a blend of white sesame and canola vegetable oils, and the restaurant employs a specialised fryer that generates electromagnetic waves vibrating the oil at 50,000 times per second, reducing oil absorption by approximately 40% compared to conventional frying. The result is tempura that is noticeably light, clean-tasting, and extraordinarily crisp — a quality that both Muslim and non-Muslim diners have described as the best tempura of their lives.
The ingredients are chosen with equal care. The signature protein is A5 Wagyu sirloin — fully halal-certified and sourced at the highest grade — battered and fried to produce a tempura of remarkable tenderness, the sirloin's natural richness transformed by the crispness of the batter into something extraordinary. Tiger prawns are used fresh, never frozen, shucked in the restaurant on the day of service. Squid is smoked with cherry blossom chips for fragrance and kneaded with charcoal into the batter for a distinctive aromatic finish. Vegetable tempura — seasonal mushrooms, shredded carrots, pearl onions with matcha salt, Senju green onion with scallion salt, shiitake with truffle salt, kakiage of sweet potato or eggplant — has drawn particular praise for the delicacy of its texture and the vibrancy of the flavours preserved through the frying process.
The dining format allows guests to construct their own tempura rice bowl from the individual pieces served, enhanced by condiments — wasabi, chopped spring onion, shredded nori — and a special tare sauce prepared without alcohol, matured for a week with tempura crumbs for depth and mellow sweetness. The meal concludes with a dashi ochazuke — hot Japanese stock poured over the remaining rice and tempura remnants, transforming the bowl into a light, savoury broth dish that provides a deeply satisfying close to the experience. Free rice refills are available throughout. A premium omakase course is also available, beginning with Wagyu beef sushi and proceeding through vegetable and seafood tempura to the premium Wagyu sirloin finale.
