Cuisines: Indian

Taj Indian Restaurant (泰姬印度餐廳) is one of Taipei's most celebrated halal dining destinations and a name that carries genuine prestige in the city's food landscape. Run by owner Rana Ameen, originally from Lahore, Pakistan, and staffed entirely by chefs recruited directly from India — led by Chef Vinod and his team from Uttarakhand — the restaurant has spent over a decade building a reputation for authentic North Indian cuisine that stands apart from the numerous adapted versions of Indian food found across Taiwan. The testament to that quality is unambiguous: Taj has been recognised by the Michelin Guide Taipei with the Bib Gourmand award for five consecutive years, a remarkable achievement for a halal restaurant in a non-Muslim country and one that places it firmly among Taipei's most consistently excellent dining establishments.

The restaurant is tucked off the main road on Lane 48, Section 4 of Civic Boulevard in Da'an District, a short walk from Zhongxiao Fuxing MRT Station. The interior is an immersive and carefully considered evocation of Indian culture — beautiful tapestries hang on the walls, intricate decorative patterns adorn the space, and Bollywood music plays warmly in the background, creating an atmosphere that feels genuinely transported rather than merely themed. The decor elements, including the spices used in cooking, are brought directly from Pakistan, lending the space an authenticity that diners from the Indian subcontinent and Southeast Asia have consistently noted and appreciated. The restaurant has been praised by some of Taiwan's most respected food writers, and its reputation among Muslim travellers from Malaysia, Singapore, Indonesia, Brunei, Thailand, and the Philippines is that of a restaurant that truly understands and caters to their palate.

The menu is a focused and well-executed sweep of North Indian cuisine, with no beef or pork on the menu — the proteins are chicken, lamb, and seafood. Signature dishes include the Taj Flaming Charcoal Grilled Chicken, prepared in the tandoor oven and arriving with the deep char and aromatic smokiness of properly high-heat clay-oven cooking. Mughal-style Lamb Kebabs draw on the great tradition of Mughal court cooking. Garlic Charcoal Naan has been repeatedly singled out as one of the best versions in Taipei. Chicken Biryani, Mutton Biryani, Chicken Tandoori, and the Chicken Palaak — curry chicken slow-cooked with spinach — are among the most frequently ordered dishes. The Dahl Makhani, with its deeply rich and buttery lentil-and-kidney-bean base simmered over low heat, is another signature that rewards the patient eater. Garlic Tiger Prawns, fried pakora, eggplant curry, Channa with curry, and a vegetable thali set round out a menu that offers satisfying options for vegetarians and vegan diners as well.
