Saffron Persian Restaurant
Hong Kong, China
Cuisines: Persian
Perched on Graham Street in the Soho neighbourhood of Central, SAFFRON Persian Cuisine holds a singular distinction in Hong Kong's extraordinarily diverse dining landscape: it is the city's first — and only — dedicated Persian restaurant. Founded in 2019 by an Iranian team with a deep personal connection to the food and culture of their homeland, SAFFRON was born from a mission to share the warmth, generosity, and extraordinary flavour depth of Persian cuisine with Hong Kong's cosmopolitan food community, and to offer the city's growing Muslim population a fully halal-certified fine dining option unlike anything previously available.
The restaurant occupies a compact, intimate space on Graham Street — a steep and characterful lane in the heart of Soho — with seating for around ten to twelve guests across four or five tables. The interior is bright and welcoming, dressed in white tones with touches of Persian décor that quietly evoke the aesthetic of Iran without overwhelming the small space. Though it is a modest room by the standards of Hong Kong's grander dining establishments, what it lacks in scale it more than compensates for in character and culinary ambition. Its location, while tucked away enough that some taxis balk at the approach, is well worth the eight-minute walk from Central MTR (Exit D2).
The kitchen operates on an uncompromising philosophy: every dish is prepared using time-honoured Persian recipes, passed through generations, with no additives or preservatives in any preparation. All meats are 100% halal-certified — lamb and beef sourced from farms in Australia and New Zealand, chicken from Thailand — and the restaurant's defining ingredient, saffron, is imported directly from Iran, lending the kitchen's rice dishes, stews, and marinades their characteristic golden hue and deeply floral, honeyed aroma. The menu is concise and focused, spanning traditional starters, char-grilled kebabs, and rich slow-cooked stews, with each dish balancing the Persian culinary principles of warm and cool ingredients, and the interplay of sour, sweet, savoury, and aromatic flavours that defines the cuisine.
Among the standout dishes: the Sultani Kebab — a prestigious combination of Barg (marinated fillet of beef) and Koobideh (hand-minced lamb or beef with herbs and spices) served on saffron-scented basmati rice — is the signature showstopper and a perennial favourite. The Bakhtiari Kebab combines tender beef and chicken on a single skewer. The Chicken Joojeh Kebab, marinated in saffron, lemon, and butter, arrives beautifully charred from the grill. Appetisers include Mast-o-Khiar (cool, refreshing yoghurt with cucumber and mint), and the Mirza Ghasemi — a smoky BBQ aubergine and garlic dip that has won particular admiration — alongside warm, freshly baked Persian flatbread. Stews including the Khoresht Karafs (celery and lamb) reflect the kitchen's commitment to slow-cooked, herb-forward Persian comfort food. For dessert, the classic Baghlava and Persian Black Tea provide a fitting, traditionally aromatic close, and the Bastani — Persian saffron ice cream — has been singled out by diners as a highlight worth saving room for. Portions are notably generous, and the saffron rice accompaniment is consistently praised as first-rate.
Beyond its dining room, SAFFRON operates a catering arm — the only halal Persian catering service in Hong Kong — and has previously catered for international football teams, state officials, and business leaders, making it the go-to choice for Muslim-friendly event dining in the city.
