Kusum Honba Katei Ryori
Casual Dining · Kobe, Japan
Cuisines: Indian
Sixteen seats is a modest footprint for a restaurant that has built a following specifically around the idea of home cooking, and Kusum keeps to that scale deliberately, tucked into the Ijin Plaza building on Yamamoto-dori rather than expanding into a larger, more commercial space. The name translates roughly to authentic home-style cooking, a description the kitchen backs up with a menu that favours the kind of dishes served in North Indian households over the richer, restaurant-style curries found at many of Kobe's other Indian kitchens.
Samosas open the menu in their familiar fried form, and paratha sabji pairs the layered flatbread with a vegetable curry rather than serving the two separately, a combination reviewers describe as closer to a home meal than a restaurant plate. Potato curry rounds out the vegetarian side of the menu, and a rotation of other curries fills out the rest of the card, though the kitchen keeps its offerings narrower than the more expansive menus found at some of the area's larger Indian restaurants. The restaurant carries a no-pork designation on at least one dedicated halal directory, though it has not published a formal halal certificate of its own.
Yamamoto-dori runs through the Kitano hillside district, close enough to the preserved foreign merchant houses that give the area its name that visitors touring those historic buildings can reach the restaurant on foot. That location places Kusum within the same general cluster as several of Kobe's other South Asian kitchens, though its small scale and home-cooking focus set it apart from the bigger, more visible restaurants along the same street.
Kobe's concentration of small Indian and Pakistani restaurants along Yamamoto-dori and Nakayamatedori has grown dense enough that newer arrivals increasingly compete on a specific angle rather than a general curry menu, and Kusum's positioning around home-style cooking rather than a broader restaurant repertoire reflects that shift. For diners who have already worked through the area's larger, more established kitchens, the narrower, more domestic menu offers a different register of the same regional cuisine.
