Masjid Malabar - Malabar Muslim Jama’ath Mosque

Masjid Malabar - Malabar Muslim Jama’ath Mosque

Mosque · Singapore City, Singapore

Malabar Muslim Jama’ath Mosque stands at the junction of Victoria Street and Jalan Sultan, close to Kampong Glam and the old Jalan Kubor cemetery area. Its history is tied to the Malabari Muslim community in Singapore, whose members came mainly from the Malabar Coast in present-day Kerala. The Malabar Muslim Jama’ath was established in 1927 and registered in 1929, first operating from a shophouse before eventually anchoring its community work at Victoria Street. The mosque project began in the late 1950s, with a foundation stone ceremony held in 1956, and the completed mosque was officially opened on 24 January 1963.

The mosque is easily recognised by its blue-tiled exterior, golden domes, and octagonal minaret. Its colour and form give it a strong visual presence between Victoria Street, Jalan Sultan, Lavender, and Kampong Glam. The building serves Friday prayers, religious classes, zikir sessions, community gatherings, and major festival congregations. Its identity remains closely connected to the Malabari community, making it distinct within Singapore’s mosque landscape as a place shaped by regional Indian Muslim heritage, central-city access, and long-running community organisation.
