Islamic Center at New York University (ICNYU)

Islamic Center · New York City, United States

The Islamic Center at New York University is a campus-based Islamic centre serving students, staff, faculty, alumni, and the wider Muslim community around Greenwich Village. It operates within NYU’s student and spiritual life structure, with its main prayer and programme space at the Global Center for Academic and Spiritual Life on Thompson Street. Its setting places it beside Washington Square Park, NYU academic buildings, student housing, and the wider downtown Manhattan community.

ICNYU is not a traditional standalone mosque building. Its role is closer to a university Islamic centre and prayer space, offering daily and weekly religious services, Friday prayer, halaqas, workshops, community gatherings, and student-focused programmes. Its distinctive place in New York Muslim life comes from its campus setting and its connection with young adults, converts, graduate students, professionals, and international students. The centre has also become associated with large public Eid gatherings at Washington Square Park, bringing together Muslim communities beyond the university. ICNYU’s importance lies in how it combines worship, education, pastoral support, and civic-facing community life within a major urban university.
