Carlton Mosque (Albanian Australian Islamic Society)
Mosque · Melbourne, Australia
Carlton Mosque has a particularly important place in Melbourne’s Islamic history. Operated by the Albanian Australian Islamic Society, it was opened in 1969 and is recognised as Melbourne’s first mosque. Its origins go back to the Albanian Muslim community that formed the society in 1963, at a time when Melbourne had limited Islamic infrastructure and many worshippers relied on adapted houses or temporary prayer spaces. The mosque on Drummond Street gave the community a permanent religious and cultural base in the inner north.
The building reflects the story of Albanian migration and community organisation after the Second World War. Its minaret, prayer areas, and community facilities sit within Carlton North’s residential streets, giving the mosque a quiet but historically meaningful presence. Over time, it supported not only Albanian religious life but also wider Muslim communities, including Turkish migrants and students from Southeast Asia. The society continues to preserve Albanian Muslim identity while offering religious services, learning programmes, youth activities, tours, and open days. Its heritage value comes from more than age alone; it represents an early chapter in Melbourne’s multicultural and Islamic community development.
