Bang Luang Mosque (Kudi Khao)
Mosque · Bangkok, Thailand
Bang Luang Mosque, also called Kudi Khao or the White Mosque, is a historic mosque in Thonburi’s Kudi Chin area. The mosque is closely tied to Muslim settlement along the old Bangkok Yai canal, where Thai, Chinese, Portuguese, Buddhist, Christian, and Muslim communities have lived near one another for generations. Its name reflects the white appearance of the building, while “Kudi Khao” remains the local name used for the mosque and surrounding community.
The mosque is distinctive because of its Thai architectural form. Instead of the dome-and-minaret style often associated with mosques, Bang Luang Mosque uses a Thai-style structure with local decorative elements, creating a building that connects Islamic worship with Bangkok’s older riverside architecture. The surrounding neighbourhood includes temples, churches, shrines, old houses, and narrow lanes, making the mosque part of a wider heritage landscape rather than an isolated religious site. It continues to serve as a place of worship for the local Muslim community and as a visible reminder of Thonburi’s long multicultural history.
